Singer Khalid took to social media on Friday to address his sexuality after being allegedly outed by a former partner.
Despite the situation, Khalid appeared unfazed, insisting he wasn’t hiding anything and asserting that his personal life isn’t anyone else’s business.
The Incident
Khalid initially hadn’t planned to discuss the topic until fellow artist Hugo Almonte made claims about him in a social media post. Almonte alleged he had been intimate with “one of your favorite gay R&B singers,” accusing the unnamed artist of offering him drugs and falsely claiming he broke into their home.
In a follow-up post, Almonte criticized openly gay artists, calling them “sh**** as f***,” and later shared a photo of himself with Khalid.
Khalid’s Response
While Khalid didn’t directly address Almonte’s comments, he confirmed his sexuality on his own Twitter page. Sharing an LGBTQ+ pride flag emoji, he wrote: “There y’all go. Next topic please lol.”
He further emphasized, “I am [gay], and that’s okay,” and dismissed the uproar, adding: “I got outted, and the world still continues to turn. Let’s get this straight (lmao), I am not ashamed of my sexuality! In reality, it ain’t nobody’s business! But I am okay with me. Love y’all.”
Khalid clarified that he wasn’t hiding his sexuality but felt no obligation to disclose it publicly, thanking fans who defended him.
One fan referenced Khalid’s 2022 song Satellite, calling it an LGBTQ+ anthem, and noted that Khalid wasn’t hiding but simply didn’t feel the need to make an announcement. Khalid responded with gratitude, saying, “Thank you,” and reaffirming he wasn’t withholding anything.
Almonte’s Justification
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Hugo Almonte explained his reasons for speaking out, claiming Khalid tried to use his influence to silence him after their relationship ended. Without naming Khalid directly, Almonte stated, “I held onto this for five years, and I finally had enough.”
Despite the controversy, Khalid has maintained a calm and confident stance, asserting his comfort with his identity while reminding fans that his personal life remains his own.
