Anyone who has ever been by the ocean knows how unpredictable it can be. One thing you should never take lightly is the tide; it can be dangerous if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The tide can unexpectedly engulf people and animals in seconds, and in some instances, it can lead to a slow and painful death. This was nearly the fate of an 18-year-old horse named Astro.
Astro’s owner, Nicole Graham, and her daughter were riding their horses along the beach near Geelong, south of Melbourne, Australia. But after some time, the horses ended up on soft sand, and the ground beneath them turned into a treacherous mud trap.
Nicole’s daughter and her horse managed to escape, but she and Astro were stuck, with Astro soon sinking up to his neck in clay, at risk of choking to death. Nicole spent three hours by Astro’s side, engaged in a desperate battle for survival.
The longer Astro remained stuck in the mud, the more dire the situation became. Meanwhile, Nicole had to keep her 1,000-pound (450 kg) horse calm to prevent him from sinking further into the mud. After three hours, Astro was on the verge of suffocating and faced the risk of dying from thirst and exhaustion. Furthermore, the tide was beginning to come in.
Fortunately, Nicole’s daughter managed to find safety and call for help. Soon, a rescue team and a veterinarian arrived at the scene. To calm Astro, the veterinarian administered a sedative. Nicole remained by Astro’s side throughout the entire ordeal, speaking to him to help keep him calm. A helicopter was also called, but it couldn’t assist because Astro was so deeply stuck in the mud that it was impossible to attach a rope to lift him out.
The rescue team faced difficulties in freeing Astro, and Nicole started to fear the worst as the tide drew nearer. The team attempted to dig the horse out, but the ground had turned to quicksand, making it too soft to dig effectively.
A farmer then arrived on his tractor, and a final attempt was made to free the horse using a rope tied to his vehicle.
That’s when the miracle happened — Nicole, the rescue workers, and the farmer were able to free Astro from the mud.

Nicole owns 10 horses and often rides them along the beach, but this was the first time one of her horses had gotten stuck.
Luckily, everything turned out well this time, but this story serves as a reminder that it’s always wise to be extra cautious.
Most importantly, this story highlights the incredible bond between humans and their animals, proving that this connection can make miracles truly happen!
